In the last one-year two major developments that took place in the city of Vellore will determine it’s future. First one being the opening of Golden Temple, and the second is the announcement to declare Vellore as a corporation on August 1st, 2008.
Golden temple, by some estimates, is more attractive than the Golden temple in Amritsar and the temple in Tirupaty. Since it’s opening, the traffic in Vellore has increased by 30,000 on the weekdays and 50,000 on the weekends. This has put tremendous pressure on the city’s existing physical infrastructure.
Geographically, Vellore has become the largest corporation in the state of Tamilnadu even surpassing the area of Chennai, with an approximate population of about 9,00,000. This change will enable the city to mop up larger tax revenue and to get more state funds.
Putting these two changes together, city of Vellore should expect to see widened roads, flyovers, star hotels, and reasonable recreational facilities. With these improving amenities and medical (Christian Medical College) & educational facilities could spark a migration of large number of people to the city’s shores.
These changes could also make the city attractive to the industry. There are three big businesses that are expected in the coming years namely SEZ near Ranipet, IT park in Vellore and the impact of Chennai – Bangalore Industrial corridor on Vellore. These businesses and the secondary businesses will create employment that in it self will help the city to improve its amenities further.
Education, Health care, Employment and livable amenities are the most important elements to sustain a city. Some pieces of the puzzle are already in place and the rest are expected to be in place sooner. It’s just a matter of time before Vellore could become the happening city and its not an exaggeration to say that the next decade belongs to the city of Vellore.

This is exactly is my fear. I am sure Vellore if allowed would meet the same destiny of those so called 'developed' cities in the country.
This is ridiculous that to develop Vellore, both vertically and horizontally, one must upgrade from its quiet, scenic environs tha had boasted of many historical importance, to a conceret jungle of the future?
Why is that there is no resistance or opposition to the government's move to elevate this little town as one of the biggest city in the state?
god save vellore!
