Vellore is a city with glorious history and strong future. It is the place where the sepoy mutiny (struggle for the freedom of India) took place almost 200 years ago and the future lies in the institutions that it has built over a period of time providing employment and education in thousands.
Commercial activities (of Christian Medical College (CMC), Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT), Golden Temple, Leather Industry) have become so robust in Vellore that it needs an airport.
Fortunately, Vellore has an unused airstrip that is been suggested by many to the Government to start air services but it took UDAN scheme to give life to this airstrip.
In January of 2018, Turbo Aviation had won the rights under the 2nd phase of UDAN scheme of Government of India and the Airports Authorities of India (AAI) is in the process of getting the infrastructure ready (there are some land acquisition issues) for the air services to resume preferably by July of 2018.
Now coming to that second airport as my title suggested, if the grapevine of VITAA (alumni association) is to be believed, VIT is in talks to start a small airstrip of their own. This is exciting time to be in Vellore.
